About the Race

ABOUT THE MICHAEL J GRAY MEMORIAL RACE:

The Michael Gray Memorial Ski & Snowboard Race is a great opportunity for all types of skiers and snowboarders to spend a day of fun at beautiful Ski Windham and to support the Adaptive Sports Foundation. Michael J. Gray, Jr. was a snowboard instructor with the Ski Windham Snow sports School, when he was tragically killed in a car accident. To honor Michaels memory and dedication to snow sports, the Gray family started a memorial race in Michael’s honor. The proceeds from the race are donated to the Adaptive Sports Foundation (ASF), an organization that offers a disabled person the chance to enjoy the sport of skiing/snowboarding as much as Michael did.

ABOUT THE ADAPTIVE SPORTS FOUNDATION:

Since 1984, the Adaptive Sports Foundation (ASF) has been a non-profit organization that has provided skiing and snowboarding lessons to people with disabilities at Ski Windham in Windham, New York. The foundation started out with approximately 20 volunteer instructors and 30 students. Since that initial season, the Foundation has grown and is now serving over 1500 individuals annually and has over 170 volunteer instructors on its roster.

WHAT MAKES THE ADAPTIVE SPORTS FOUNDATION SO UNIQUE?

What makes the Foundation so special is that it offers the chance for disabled persons to learn the skills of certain sports and realize that they can become participating members of society. The confidence and self esteem found in the accomplishment of learning a new sport can be seen in the student’s everyday life. The philosophy is, “If they can accomplish a sport like skiing, they can do anything!”

Where does your donation go?

The Windham Mountain Adaptive Sports Foundation needs to raise close to half a million dollars annually to cover the expenses of running the programs. Although the Foundation’s financial base has grown over the years, the Windham Mountain Adaptive Sports Foundation’s philosophy has stayed the same. The Foundation strives to offer recreational opportunities to special needs children and adults at the lowest possible costs. Through fundraisers like the MJ Gray Memorial Ski & SnowboardRace, corporate sponsorships, and individual donations, the Windham Mountain Adaptive Sports Foundation has been able to maintain its prices with little or no increase since it opened its doors for the 1983-84 ski season. If the foundation had to charge each student the full cost of each lesson, the student would incur a cost over $250 per visit. Currently, the Foundation charges between $25-$60 a lesson, which is less than a quarter of the real costs of the programs.
